Yoga Skills for Therapists

DO YOU EVER FEEL LIKE

there must be something more to therapy …

YOU’RE NOT ALONE.

We hear from so many therapists who are great at what they do, but aren’t getting the results they want for their clients.

They are feeling  tired of getting stuck-in-the-story, and sharing the same old CBT and ACT strategies.

Outside of work, they have been going to yoga classes for their own self care, and have been AMAZED at how yoga has helped with their own mental health and happiness.

They are keen to bring yoga into their therapy work, but they have questions like:

9

How do I teach yoga to clients?

They are lacking the skills and confidence to translate what they have learnt in the yoga studio into the therapy chair.

9

Which practices are best for each presentation?

They have a sense that yoga is great for mental health, but they’re not sure which practices to teach for different client presentations.

9

Will I get in trouble for teaching yoga?

The ethical guidelines of evidence-based practice, dual relationships and scope-of-practice can be tricky to navigate, and they don’t want to risk their registration.

9

What qualifications do I need?

They want to make sure that they have the right qualifications to confidently, ethically and effectively share yoga practices.

WHAT OUR GRADUATES ARE SAYING

Being a seasoned psychologist but a new yoga teacher I have kept both very separate and started to think how I could integrate yoga skills into to my psychologist practice.

Since completing the course I feel more confident and have a better understanding of how I can bring some of these yoga skills into the counselling room to help clients struggling with mental health and also use the skills on myself when I’m feeling stressed.

I would recommend this course for any allied health professional working in mental health.

Edwina Scerri | Psychologist

I enjoy yoga and meditation but hadn’t felt confident enough to incorporate it into my counselling practice and wanted to do some formal training, from a trusted expert and begin offering practices to clients.

Since taking the training I have started creating space in the morning for a daily practice, which I’d neglected since becoming a dad, but it’s such an important thing for me to do as I’m a better husband, dad, counsellor and human if I’ve engaged in prayer, meditation or yoga first thing in the morning.

This course is awesome for anyone who wants to deepen their own practice and/or share their practice/techniques with others.

Tom Davis | Counsellor + Chaplain

The Yoga Skills for Health Professionals training has supported me in slowing down, taking time out of my generally full life to take stock and connect more deeply. While I have learned some wonderful new skills, I have also increased my own self-care capacity and solidified my personal yoga practice. It has been deeply enjoyable.

Annalee Atia | Coach + Mentor

I signed up for the training as I had a growing interest in how I could bring yoga into the therapy space but lacked the knowledge or framework around how to do this confidently.

This course provided that along with increasing my confidence to bring these skills to the therapy space knowing they had an evidence-base behind them.

I love the opportunity to practice the skills personally and embed a mindful check-in practice in my day-to-day life.

I would absolutely recommend this training to anyone interested in how yoga can complement the work you do in supporting the mental health needs of others.

C.H. | Clinical Psychologist

I signed up for the training because I have always enjoyed my own yoga practice and have wanted to bring the benefits of yoga to my clinical work with clients.

The training was extremely well thought out and delivered in a way that was clear, supportive, accessible, professional, and trauma informed.

All of the skills and information are very effective and easy to bring in to my own daily life and in to my clinical practice.

I feel more in touch with my breathing and knowing where I am at in respects to my window of tolerance, and able to easily apply the practices taught in the training to adjust my state of arousal.

This will be invaluable through out my life and I can’t wait to teach my clients as well as my family. I enjoyed being able to do the training in my own time and to be able to go back and review easily. It is incredibly well laid out and highly professional.

I would recommend this course to anyone.

MODULE 1 → YOGA PHILOSOPHY

We begin the training with understanding the philosophical underpinnings of yoga, so we can honour and appreciate, rather than appropriate the brilliant teachings of yoga. We also take the time to practice together and to get to know one another.

    6. Establish our own yoga nidra practices
    7. Engage in reflective practices to consolidate this week’s learning

With the foundations established, this week we will explore the fascinating intersection of western and yoga psychology.

This is where the work really comes alive!

    6. Engage in reflective practices to consolidate this week’s learning
MODULE 3 → FINDING CENTRE

This week is all about getting really practical!

Yoga theory is fascinating, but the magic happens when we get out of our heads, and into the body and the breath.

In this module we will:

    1. Unpack different ways we can find our own equilibrium and support clients to find theirs
    2. Experiment with a variety of different yoga practices to find centre
    3. Try out a gentle full length yoga class with Dr Lauren
    4. Engage in reflective practices to consolidate this week’s learning
MODULE 4 → SELF REGULATION

We started with the theory and philosophy, moved on to cultivating our own yoga practice, and now we start exploring how to share yoga practices with our clients for various presentations.

In this module we will:

    1. Explore important guidelines when considering sharing yoga practices with therapy clients
    2. Experiment with different yoga practices for up-regulation
    3. Experiment with different yoga practices for down-regulation
    4. Try out full length yoga classes with Dr Lauren for up- and down-regulation
    5. Engage in reflective practices to consolidate this week’s learning
MODULE 5 → YOGA NIDRA

Yoga nidra can be an incredibly helpful and accessible practice to share with anxious, stressed, fatigued and overwhelmed clients, and to practice ourselves to manage the stresses of life.

In this module we will:

    1. Explore the research into yoga nidra for mental health
    2. Unpack the important phases of a yoga nidra practice
    3. Learn how to share yoga nidra practices with clients
    4. Practice teaching yoga nidra
    5. Engage in reflective practices to consolidate this week’s learning
MODULE 6 → BRINGING IT TOGETHER

In this final week we will review everything we’ve covered and look at how we can authentically bring these yoga practices into our diverse therapy work.

In this module we will:

    1. Explore professional, legal and insurance obligations when bringing yoga into the therapy room
    2. Look at important considerations when integrating yoga into therapy
    3. Consider different ways to integrate yoga into our work as health professionals
    4. Experiment with bringing yoga into your work
    5. Engage in reflective practices to consolidate this week’s learning
    6. Explore next steps for continuing on this journey of bringing yoga into therapy

HAVE QUESTIONS?

HOW MUCH TIME WILL I NEED?

We suggest a minimum of 3 hour per week, including the weekly lecture, reflections, yoga practices and the 90 minute live group mentoring call.

However, the more you put into this, the more you’ll get out of it.

You’re a grown up, do it in a way that works for you!

How does the training work?

At the beginning of the week you’ll get an email from us with access to the week’s lectures, reflections and practices in our online Shala (the course website).

You will then have the week to watch the video lecture, engage with the reflective prompts and do your own yoga practice (yay!).

On Friday you’ll meet with Dr Lauren Tober and the rest of the group on Zoom for the live group mentoring session, for discussion, practice and integration (dates and times are here). If you are unable to make it live, you are welcome to watch the recording afterwards.

If you would like additional support from Dr Lauren Tober during or after the training, you can choose the 1:1 Mentoring option for additional 1:1 sessions.

Go here to see the details.

What are the pre-requisites for this course?

We ask that you are a trained health professional (or health professional-in-training).

This includes psychologists, social workers, counsellors and psychiatrists, as well as doctors, coaches and other allied health professionals interested in mental health.

If you are not a trained health professional, but would still like to take this course, reach out and let us know why you think this course would be a good fit for you.

Do I have to be a yoga teacher?

No, you do not!

The Yoga Skills for Health Professionals training is designed especially for mental health professionals with no prior yoga training experience and for health professionals who have already completed a yoga teacher training course, but feel like they didn’t get enough information to integrate it into their clinical work.

If you have already taken a yoga teacher training course, please know that the course will be aimed at non-yoga teachers, however a beginner’s mind is always welcome for experienced teachers! You can also find out about our offerings designed especially for health professionals who are also yoga teachers here.

If you are a yoga teacher, and not a therapist, this will not the right course for you. Instead, find out about our trainings especially for yoga teachers interested in mental health here.

Do I have to be an experienced therapist?

No, not at all.

While many of the therapists who take the training have years of experience under their belt, we wholeheartedly welcome new therapists and therapists-in-training.

Is this a Yoga Teacher Training course?

No, this is not a Yoga Teacher Training course.

A Yoga Teacher Training course requires a minimum of 200 hours of training, much more than this program.

Yoga Skills for Health Professionals is, however, the perfect first step for therapists interested in becoming Yoga Teachers, or for those simply wanting to bring a few yoga tools into their therapy work.

And just quietly, we’re considering putting together a 200 hour Teacher Training course for Health Professionals, and this Yoga Skills training is the best way to get started.

Will I learn how to teach a yoga class?

In this course you will learn how to bring yoga practices (like pranayama, meditation and yoga nidra) into your therapy work. You will not learn how to teach a full length yoga asana class, nor can you call yourself a yoga teacher after taking this course.

To teach a full length yoga class, you will need to take a Yoga Teacher Training course, which is a minimum of 200 hours of training, much more than this program.

How do the 1:1 mentoring sessions work?

These six 1:1 mentoring sessions with Dr Lauren Tober are designed to support you to integrate the teachings from the program into your life and work.

In the first session you will clarify your goals, and over the subsequent sessions, work hand-in-hand with Dr Lauren to achieve them.

This might include:

  • Developing your personal yoga or mediation practice
  • Refining the ways that you bring yoga into your therapy work
  • Discussing ethical dilemmas relevant to your work
  • Exploring client issues, including the appropriateness of yoga practices for specific clients or groups
  • Business mentoring to bring yoga into your work
  • Exploring what’s next to develop your yoga skills

The sessions can be held before, during or after the training, and must occur before the end of November 2024. Dr Lauren is available for 1:1 sessions on most Wednesdays (in Australian business hours) and Friday mornings (online and during the training only).

Each sessions lasts for 50 minutes, and can be held online from anywhere in the world, or in-person at the Centre for Mind Body Wellness in Mullumbimby, Australia.

Please note that this offering is for mentoring, not counselling.

If you would like 1:1 mentoring with Dr Lauren Tober, simply choose the 1:1 Mentoring option when you sign up.

Go here to see the details.

Is yoga really evidence-based?

There is growing evidence to suggest that yoga is a powerful tool for mental health and happiness. We’ll be covering this in the training so you can feel confident that what you’re sharing with clients is evidence-based, and is within your scope of practice as a therapist.

And if you’re wondering where the quote from Bessel Van Der Kolk that we used on this page is from, you can find the interview with him sharing about his research here.

Here’s the full quote:

Our studies show that yoga is equally as beneficial—or more beneficial—than the best possible medicatons in alleviating traumatic stress symptoms. In the studies we did involving neuroimaging of the brain before and after regular yoga practice, we were able to show that the areas of the brain involving self-awareness get activated by doing yoga, and those are the areas that get locked out by trauma and that are needed in order to heal it.

While we love it when you attend the sessions live (we want to get to meet you in real time and get to know you!) we do understand that live calls aren’t for everyone and that life is busy and full, and attending at the set time isn’t always possible.

So if you can’t make the sessions live, or you prefer to work solo, you can watch the replay later in your own time.
